Visited Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and interviewed BMA officers on flood situation
and management.
Besides, visited a wastewater treatment plant in Bangkok, Rattanakosin Water Environment Control Plant, and interviewed the persons in charge.
(Interview at BMA)
Being mentioned that, the heavy rain in an up north area caused huge amount of runoff flowing over the capacity of Chaopraya River and this inland runoff water entered Bangkok from the north side are the main reasons for this time flood. BMA prepared pumping systems to manage excess water overflow from Chaopraya River. However, the system was not designed to include the inland runoff water entering Bangkok from the north side. This spread out flood encounter areas in Bangkok. Other concern after water is dried out is how to manage garbage problem and restore building filled with mold. Future measure to protect Bangkok flood is to increase drainage capacity of canal network in Bangkok, but this measure requires big budget and spends long period of time. However, it may be valuable and should be implemented quickly if the same size of flood attacks Bangkok next year.
(Wastewater treatment plant survey)
Due to the effect of flood, some small wastewater treatment plants could not operate but this plant could be operated over the flood period. However the plant also was impacted by the consequence of flood and excess sludge could not be treated following the regular capacity. To solve this problem, treatment capacity was reduce to half. Retention time of the aeration tanks was prolonged to control the amount of excess sludge.
